Buzz Aldrin, born Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr., in Montclair, New Jersey, 1930, flew dozens of combat missions as an Air Force pilot in Korea.
Afterward, Aldrin earned a Ph.D. from M.I.T. before joining the U.S. space program. As part of the 1966 Gemini 12 flight, Aldrin took a historic 5 1/2-hour walk in space, demonstrating that humans could survive in its vacuum.
