That half second is made up of three parts: The club, the swing, and the ball. Everyone seems to focus completely on the first two sometimes totally blowing the ball off and just "playing with whatever they have in the bag". I know, because I did it too. There is nothing worse for golfers than wasting a good swing. Maybe it was a perfect drive on the range right before tee off. Maybe it was that perfect practice swing. Or maybe, just maybe, you wasted a good swing because your golf ball was not suited for the situation, or was just a bad ball altogether. If we choose a ball at all, many of us choose a ball for the wrong reasons. After all, the golf ball is our closest connection with the hole and, as such, you would think that the one you choose would be a big decision. Take me for instance. I grew up hitting balata covered Titleist golf balls I had fished from the creeks of my father's club in North Carolina. In those days finding a perfect-skinned, un-scuffed, soft-covered Titleist golf ball was like discovering a piece of white gold. I loved the soft feel and distinctly muted click of those old balata balls. The way they spun and landed softly. I even took an odd comfort in the classy and dignified "Titleist" logo, which leaned slights as if written by the hand of some mythicaly great player. Titleist seemed to be a ball I could grow into. Did these balls actually make me play better golf? Beats me. I just loved playing with them! Well, things are different now. Titleist currently offers 5 different models of its high-performance golf balls, plus four Pinnacle-brand distance models. And deciding which one to use is not at all easy. "It's not our view that one kind of ball fits all" says George Sine, Vice President of marketing and strategic planning for Titleist. It is confusing but believe me, it's worth it! The manufacturers in this $1.5 billion dollar industry hope you don't figure it out. They would much rather sway you with fancy talk, blind brand loyalty, and pro images. If you're confused or don't care it means that you will not only buy more high priced balls but you'll lose them more often because the ball isn't right for your stroke! (Which of course means even more sales.) Makes sense doesn't it? You've probably heard people say, "just pick any ball, it doesn't matter" or "use what Tiger uses" how about: "Use the cheapest ball you can" or "just use the balls you find along the side of the cart path". You know what though, they are all right, if that ball fits you. Most of us don't know enough to even know the right questions to ask. Heck, even 6th graders know more about golf balls then most of us. Professor Harpole runs "science on the Green" funded by the USGA for 6th graders. She says "The Students are just amazed at the difference the dimples [on a golf ball] make". Students learned the affect of dimples and how the coefficient of restitution (COR) influences how far the ball will go. Anybody know what the maximum COR allowed under USGA rules might be? Maybe we should start with what COR means.. Both answers are in the book.
