Red Sox acquire CF Kotsay from Braves (AP)

The Boston Red Sox have outfield depth after completing a trade with the Atlanta Braves for center fielder Mark Kotsay.

The Red Sox, in a tight pennant race, acquired Kotsay on Wednesday, only one day after placing J.D. Drew on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

The 32-year-old Kotsay hit .289 with six home runs and 37 runs batted in 88 games with the Braves.


 

Braves broadcaster Skip Caray dies at 68 (AP)

The Atlanta Braves say longtime broadcaster Skip Caray, the son of famous Chicago Cubs voice Harry Caray, has died in his sleep.

He was 68 years old. The team says Skip Caray died in his Atlanta home on Sunday. He had several ailments in the last year but had recovered enough to continue calling Braves home games at Turner Field.

Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs delivered a three-run homer in a seven-run fifth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the Atlanta Braves 10-9 Saturday to spoil Mike Hampton's return to the major leagues.

Making his first appearance since Aug. 19, 2005, Hampton couldn't protect a 9-3 lead. The two-time All-Star overcame two major operations on his left elbow and an assortment of other injuries...


 

Kuroda near perfect, Mets bullpen hangs on in win

Hiroki Kuroda was nearly perfect in lifting the under-.500 Dodgers into a first-place tie in the NL West.

Pedro Martinez was sharp, too.

The Mets bullpen, though, almost denied New York its first winning record in a month.

Kuroda took a perfect game into the eighth inning and settled for a one-hitter, leading Los Angeles to a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.

The right-hander retired the first 21 batters before Mark Teixeira lined his 70th pitch into the right-field corner for a double.
