Lakers 7-0, Paul Pierce delivers Hawks first loss

The Los Angeles Lakers had a surprisingly easy time staying undefeated. Only a 'Super' effort kept the Atlanta Hawks from joining them.

Paul Pierce made a jumper with 0.5 seconds left to give the Boston Celtics a 103-102 victory over Atlanta on Wednesday night, handing the Hawks their first loss of the season.

The Hawks (6-1) provided another tough test for the Celtics, just as they did in going the distance against the eventual champions in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Looking to fill the void left when Josh Childress bolted for Greece, the Atlanta Hawks are close to completing a deal with free agent Maurice Evans.

A person within the league, speaking on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been completed, told The Associated Press on Sunday a deal could be signed by midweek.

Billy Knight will resign as general manager of the Atlanta Hawks in July, despite leading the team to its first playoff appearance in nine years.

Knight said Wednesday it was time to "take a break" following a season when his authority appeared to be weakened by unsuccessful lobbying with owners to fire coach Mike Woodson.

Atlanta Hawks general manager Billy Knight is stepping down. The announcement comes after the Hawks ended a nine-year playoff drought and forced the Boston Celtics to a Game 7 in a first round playoff series that ended Sunday.

He said Wednesday he is resigning from the organization effective July 1. The 55-year-old Knight spent six years with the organization.
