Paul Biedermann of Germany beat the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at last year's Beijing Olympics.

Phelps won the final heat, but Biedermann's time in the previous heat was faster.

China sentences 2 to death for attack in Xinjiang

A Chinese court Wednesday sentenced two people to death for what it said was attempt to sabotage the Beijing Olympics with an attack in the far-west region of Xinjiang that killed 17 police days before the games.

The Xinhua News Agency said the sentences were handed down by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court.

It did not give any other details. Calls to the court rang unanswered Wednesday.

Vietnam breaks up rally before last international torch stop

The Olympic torch was paraded through the streets of Vietnam's largest city Tuesday on the final leg of an international tour that has been dogged by protests against China.

Hundreds of flag-waving supporters cheered as the relay began in downtown Ho Chi Min City.

Security along the route was tight and there were no immediate signs of any protesters.
