The Chicago Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg from the Florida Marlins on Thursday, a move than means closer Kerry Wood won't return.

Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs.

General manager Jim Hendry said Wood was deserving of a three- or four-year deal and the Cubs are not prepared to offer him one.


 

Maddon, Piniella named managers of year (AP)

Joe Maddon has won the American League Manager of the Year after guiding the Tampa Bay Rays from baseball's basement to the World Series.

Lou Piniella of the Chicago Cubs is the National League winner. Maddon succeeded Piniella as Tampa Bay manager in 2006.

He was an easy winner Wednesday in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is the American League Rookie of the Year, and Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto is the NL winner.

Following a season of breakthroughs for the AL champion Rays, Longoria became the first Tampa Bay player to win a national award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

He was a unanimous winner Monday, receiving all 28 first-place votes. Soto, who helped the Cubs win the NL Central title, got 31 of 32 first-place votes.


 

Cubs give GM Hendry 4-year extension (AP)

General manager Jim Hendry and the Chicago Cubs agreed Monday to a four-year contract extension through the 2012 season.

The move came following the Cubs' best regular season in more than six decades. They won their second straight NL Central title but got swept out of the playoffs for the second straight year.

Right-hander Rich Harden's $7 million option for next year has been exercised by the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs acquired the hard-throwing right-hander from Oakland on July 8.

He was the losing pitcher in Game 3 of the NL playoffs on Saturday night as the Cubs were swept in three games by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
