Yzerman to run Canada's Olympic team (AP)

Steve Yzerman will be appointed executive director of Canada's hockey team for the 2010 Vancouver Games. The Detroit Red Wings executive replaces Wayne Gretzky, who held the job for the past two Olympics.

Hockey Canada will introduce Yzerman on Saturday in Ottawa, where the team's management staff for the Winter Games will be announced.

Wrigley Field is going to be the frozen confines on New Year's Day 2009 when the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings meet the Chicago Blackhawks outdoors in the home park of the Chicago Cubs.

It will be the NHL's second Winter Classic. Last year in Buffalo, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 before a crowd of 71,217.


 

Larionov, Anderson top Hockey Hall class (AP)

Former Detroit Red Wings center Igor Larionov and ex-Edmonton Oilers star Glenn Anderson have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Former linesman Ray Scapinello and builder Ed Chynoweth also made the Hall on Tuesday. The induction ceremony will be held on Nov. 10.

Larionov won two Olympic gold medals with the Soviet Union and was one of the first players from the country to play in the NHL.

Dominik Hasek is expected to announce his retirement, a person in the NHL told The Associated Press on Sunday night.

The Detroit Red Wings scheduled a news conference for Monday morning without revealing details. A person within the league, who requested anonymity because the announcement was Hasek's to make, said Hasek was expected to end his award-winning career.

The Detroit Red Wings are Stanley Cup champions because they excel at both ends of the rink. None of them does it better than Henrik Zetterberg, whose two-way play earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
