Nadal takes down Federer in Wimbledon classic

Rafael Nadal has ended Roger Federer's five years of dominance at Wimbledon, beating the top-ranked player in a riveting five-set final.

Nadal was playing in his third straight final at the All England Club, but finally managed to get the better of the 12-time Grand Slam champion and won 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7 on Sunday.

Federer had 12 chances to break Nadal through the first three sets, but managed to convert only one.

Venus beats Serena in Wimbledon final (AP)

Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon singles title Saturday, beating younger sister Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in the final.

Defending champion Venus is 5-2 in Wimbledon finals, losing only to Serena in 2002 and '03. The win at the All England Club gave Venus her seventh major title.

The match was the seventh Grand Slam final between the American sisters, with Serena leading 5-2.


 

New blood in women's tennis manifesting at the All England Club

Venus and Serena Williams have won six of the eight championships contested here at the All England Club this millennium.

On Monday, they sailed through to the quarterfinals -- and still, neither has dropped a set.

There has been a Williams sister in seven of those eight finals, and it's looking increasingly likely that there will be another come Sunday.

Possibly two.

Zheng Jie, the world number 133, on beating top seed Ana Ivanovic: "It's a real surprise and I have to thank Wimbledon for giving me a wildcard.

It was tough. Ana has a good serve and a forehand so I tried to play to her backhand. I tried to enjoy it and told myself to keep going."
