US beats Japan 8-4, wins baseball bronze (AP)

The U.S. baseball team had to settle for bronze, certainly not the medal color the Americans had planned to bring home.

Taylor Teagarden hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the fifth and Jason Donald followed with a two-run homer off the left-field foul pole, lifting the United States to an 8-4 victory over Japan on Saturday.

Pujols fifth-fastest player to 300 HRs (AP)

Albert Pujols hit his 300th career home run Friday night, becoming the fifth-youngest player to reach the milestone.

The Cardinals slugger lined his 18th homer of the season on a 2-2 pitch from the Cubs' Bob Howry in the eighth inning, the ball banging off the foul pole in left field.

He beat Hall of Famer Mel Ott for the fifth-fastest by one day.
