A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein is likely to join the Chicago Cubs within the next 48 hours.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because no announcement had been made. The Cubs fired general manager Jim Hendry on Aug.

The Houston Astros have received permission from Boston to speak to coaches Tim Bogar and Brad Mills about their open managerial job.

The Boston Red Sox have cut struggling pitcher John Smoltz. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein delivered the news to Smoltz on Friday.

The 42-year-old righty was designated for assignment, meaning Boston has 10 days to trade or release him.

Smoltz was roughed up by the New York Yankees in a 13-6 loss Thursday night.
