A wolf expert from UW-Madison told state lawmakers Wednesday there are serious problems with a bill to create a hunting season for grey wolves.

The number of deer killed during the recent shotgun seasons in Iowa is down about 9 percent from last year and about 30 percent lower than in 2006.

State wildlife officials say two people have died in hunting-related incidents but overall the 2011-12 season has had a safe start.

So far this year, four people have died in hunting-related accidents in Minnesota.

Officials with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources expect the turkey harvest will be similar to or slightly higher than last fall hunting season.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is reminding people to be careful as western bear hunting season opens.

The hunting season began Saturday and runs through Oct. 23. The state issued 395 moose hunting permits through a lottery, with permit holders selected from 14,000 applicants in a random drawing by a computer.
