Defending women's champion Francesca Schiavone wasted little time in reaching round two of this year's French Open with a thumping 6-2 6-0 victory over American teenager Melanie Oudin.

Photograph: Gregorio Borgia/AP Italy secured its second Fed Cup title in four years today after Flavia Pennetta comfortably beat US Open quarter-finalist Melanie Oudin 7-5, 6-2.

The experienced Italians took an insurmountable 3-0 lead over the young United States team in the best-of-five series on an outdoor clay court at the Rocco Polimeni club.

NEW YORK -- SI.com caught up with senior writer S.L. Price following Melanie Oudin's loss to Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals of the U.S.

Open. With her deep run in New York, Oudin is projected to make her top-50 debut and could reach as high as No. 43 when the rankings come out following the Open.

She is the youngest American to reach the quarterfinals at any Grand Slam since Serena Williams in 1999.
