It's official now. This is NOT Japan and the 2006 World Championships, not to mention Athens and the 2004 Olympics.

This is Beijing and the 2008 Olympics, and the U.S. is back in men's basketball. These Americans, who looked so lost two years ago in Japan, appear to have found their Olympic way in China.


 

Is Phelps the greatest Olympics champion ever?

On Wednesday, Michael Phelps won gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and 4x200-meter relay to increase his career total to 11 Olympic gold medals, the most by any athlete in any sport in the history of the Games.

Phelps had been tied with four other athletes, each of whom had nine. You could make a case for each of those athletes, and for Phelps, as the greatest Olympic athlete in history.

Morgan Hamm's eyes were red, his voice shaky. The bone spurs digging into his left leg made it impossible for him to tumble, and giving up his spot on the U.S. men's gymnastics team was the right thing to do -- the only thing to do.

That didn't make it hurt any less. Hamm withdrew Thursday, two days before competition begins.


 

Shoulder to keep Sharapova from US Open (AP)

Maria Sharapova's bad right shoulder will keep her out of the U.S. Open, too, The Associated Press has learned.

The injury that the No. 3-ranked Sharapova cited in pulling out of the Beijing Olympics also will keep her sidelined during the year's last Grand Slam tournament, a U.S.

Open official told the AP on Friday.
