Ravens QB Boller out for season (AP)

Quarterback Kyle Boller was placed on injured reserve by the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday, ending his season and perhaps his stay with the team.

Boller hurt his shoulder in Baltimore's second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings and has not played since.

Coach John Harbaugh described the injury as either a torn labrum or other damage that would render Boller unable to play this year.


 

Bengals QB Palmer suffers broken nose (AP)

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer broke his nose during Saturday night's preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, but coach Marvin Lewis said he should be ready for the regular season opener.

Lewis said in a statement Sunday that Palmer had a small crack in one of his nose bones and it took doctors about 10 minutes to put it back in place.


 

Giants' Umenyiora hurts knee, carted off (AP)

Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora was carted off the field in the second quarter of the New York Giants' annual preseason game against the New York Jets after his left knee "locked up" on Saturday night.

X-rays were negative but further examinations are planned Sunday, the team said. The 26-year-old could not put any weight on his leg.

Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora hurt his left knee and was carted off the field in the second quarter of the New York Giants' annual preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday night.

Umenyiora was getting an X-ray and the extent of the injury was not immediately known. The 26-year-old, six-year veteran could not put any weight on his leg.

He was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around the shoulders of two trainers.


 

Merriman says second knee ligament also torn

Chargers coach Norv Turner is more concerned with having linebacker Shawne Merriman on the field for the playoffs than next month's regular-season opener.

Merriman, a three-time Pro Bowler, felt pain in his knee after playing in San Diego's preseason game on Aug. 9.

On Thursday, Merriman said he has a torn posterior cruciate ligament in the knee. He has visited noted sports surgeon Dr.

James Andrews and may see two other doctors to weigh his options.


 

Pats' Brady expected to sit out Friday (AP)

Tom Brady, nursing a foot injury, didn't start and was expected to miss his third straight preseason game Friday night when the New England Patriots played the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brady, who has practiced sporadically but hasn't played in a game, wasn't seen on the sidelines when backup quarterback Matt Cassel took the field to direct the Patriots' first series.
