Ty Law walked through the locker room, looking comfortable again in Jets green and white, when Kerry Rhodes yelled over to him.

"Hey, Ty!" Rhodes said with a big grin. "I love you, Ty!" Talk about a warm welcome back. The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback passed his physical and practiced with New York on Tuesday after signing a one-year deal to rejoin the team he played for three seasons ago.


 

Culpepper starts for Lions vs. Jaguars (AP)

Four days of practice was enough for the Detroit Lions, who started new quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Sunday.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection hasn't played this season, but got the nod against Jacksonville. Culpepper signed a two-year contract, which he negotiated as his own agent, with the Lions on Tuesday and began practicing with the team the same day.

Daunte Culpepper wants to end his brief retirement. The former Pro Bowl quarterback, who announced plans to quit football in early September after being frustrated over not finding work in the NFL, said Thursday he's considering a comeback.

But he didn't reveal which teams may be interested in his services.

The Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys on Tuesday traded a first-round pick in 2009, plus a third- and sixth-rounder that year for Williams and a seventh-round pick in '09.

Williams' best season was 2006, when he went to the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,310 yards and seven touchdowns.

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has decided to have surgery on the two torn ligaments in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.

The loss of the Pro Bowl linebacker is a huge setback for a team that has Super Bowl expectations. "Shawne informed me he did not feel right and thought it best to shut it down," Chargers general manager A.J.


 

Giants attempting to lure Strahan out of retirement

The New York Giants are interested in luring Michael Strahan out of retirement after losing Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury Saturday night.

The Super Bowl champions have contacted the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end to see if he is interested in ending a brief retirement, a person familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press on Monday.


 

Redskins DE Taylor sprains right knee (AP)

Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor left Saturday's game against Carolina with a sprained right knee.

The six-time Pro Bowl pick, acquired in a trade with Miami last month, was hurt when his leg bent awkwardly after he ended up in the middle of the pile following DeAngelo Williams' 5-yard run.


 

Chad Johnson hurting, not practicing (AP)

Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson won't be practicing with the Cincinnati Bengals for a while because his right ankle hasn't fully recovered from surgery.

Johnson didn't participate in the Bengals' first practice of training camp Monday, spending his time rehabilitating his ankle.

He runs with a limp after having his ankle cleaned out last month.
