The Ottawa Senators have managed to avoid hitting rock bottom. Alex Kovalev had two goals and an assist as the Senators stopped an 11-game winless streak and avoided falling into the NHL basement by defeating the last-place Edmonton Oilers 5-3 on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti hailed fit-again midfielder Michael Essien after the Ghanaian inspired Chelsea to a 3-1 victory over rock-bottom West Ham with a headed double.

Chelsea remained top of the Barclays Premier League and piled the pressure on under-fire West Ham boss Avram Grant with a comfortable 3-1 win over the rock-bottom Hammers at Upton Park.
