Don Wakamatsu became the first Asian-American manager in major league baseball history when he was hired Wednesday by the Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners' 14th manager, Wakamatsu was bench coach for the Oakland Athletics last season. Before that he spent five years with the Texas Rangers.

White Sox slugger Ken Griffey Jr. hit career homer No. 609 against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, tying Sammy Sosa for fifth on the career list with a two-run shot against his former team.

Griffey connected against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in the second inning for his first homer since Chicago acquired him from Cincinnati on July 31.

The Florida Marlins bolstered their bullpen Thursday by acquiring left-hander Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners for minor league right-hander Gaby Hernandez.

Florida, in the thick of the NL East and wild-card races, made the deal a few hours before baseball's 4 p.m. EDT trade deadline.

The 38-year-old Rhodes is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 22 innings.

First baseman Richie Sexson and the New York Yankees reached a deal Thursday, a week after the Seattle Mariners cut the slumping slugger.

A person familiar with the contract said Sexson would be paid a prorated share of the $390,000 minimum salary.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made.
