Phillies 2B Utley may be out until May (AP)

Philadelphia Phillies All Star second baseman Chase Utley and starting third baseman Pedro Feliz (FAY'-leez) will undergo surgery within the next week.

Utley will have hip surgery next week and could resume baseball activity in three to four months. He was bothered by a right hip problem during the season, but still managed to lead all second basemen with 33 home runs and 104 RBIs.

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has won the American League Most Valuable Player award. Pedroia got 16 of the 28 first-place votes and easily beat out Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau.

Pedroia became the first AL second baseman to win the award since Nellie Fox in 1959. Five players drew first-place votes.

Record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez got one of them and finished sixth overall.

Injured Brewer Weeks off playoff roster (AP)

Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks tore cartilage in his left knee and was replaced on the postseason roster Sunday with top prospect Alcides Escobar.

Assistant general manager Gord Ash said an MRI on Weeks showed a meniscus tear. Weeks would be eligible to return for the World Series if he can play through the injury.

Giants trade 2B Durham to Brewers (AP)

Ray Durham wore a Giants uniform for the last time, then packed up his locker and went to join the Milwaukee Brewers on the other side of the ballpark before leaving town with his new team.

San Francisco traded the veteran second baseman to the Brewers for two minor leaguers, with both clubs waiting until after the teams played Sunday to announce the swap.


 

Giants' Durham may be dealt to Brewers (AP)

The San Francisco Giants were close Sunday to trading Ray Durham to the Milwaukee Brewers for two minor leaguers.

Durham was to be in a Giants uniform for Sunday's series finale against Milwaukee. The second baseman had to approve the deal.

Durham was a late arrival to the ballpark, arriving to the clubhouse in a rush about 2 hours before the game with a bag on his shoulders.
