Phillies 2B Utley may be out until May (AP)

Philadelphia Phillies All Star second baseman Chase Utley and starting third baseman Pedro Feliz (FAY'-leez) will undergo surgery within the next week.

Utley will have hip surgery next week and could resume baseball activity in three to four months. He was bothered by a right hip problem during the season, but still managed to lead all second basemen with 33 home runs and 104 RBIs.

Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is the American League Rookie of the Year, and Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto is the NL winner.

Following a season of breakthroughs for the AL champion Rays, Longoria became the first Tampa Bay player to win a national award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

He was a unanimous winner Monday, receiving all 28 first-place votes. Soto, who helped the Cubs win the NL Central title, got 31 of 32 first-place votes.


 

Red Sox 3B Lowell out for year (AP)

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is done for the year because of a bad hip. The MVP from last year's World Series will have surgery Monday.

He was left off Boston's roster for the AL championship series against Tampa Bay because of the problem.

Lowell said before Game 4 of the ALCS that he wanted to have surgery soon so he could be ready for the start of spring training.


 

Crede joins list of injured White Sox (AP)

White Sox third baseman Joe Crede was out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against Cleveland because of a tight back, joining left fielder Carlos Quentin and center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. on the sidelines.

Crede aggravated his back diving for a ground ball in the third inning Tuesday and left in the sixth.

Injured Alex Rodriguez was not in the posted New York Yankees' lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Chicago White Sox.

A-Rod, batting .308 with four homers and 10 RBIs, strained his right quadriceps Sunday at Baltimore. Morgan Ensberg was listed as the starting third baseman against Chicago.

Rays give Longoria $17.5M deal; could be worth $44M

Rookie third baseman Evan Longoria and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed Friday to a $17.5 million, six-year contract, a deal that could be worth up to $44 million over nine seasons.

Tampa Bay has a club option for 2014 and a second option that covers 2015 and 2016. Taken third overall in the 2006 amateur draft, Longoria appeared in just six major league game before agreeing to the deal.

The 22-year-old was brought up from Triple-A Durham last Saturday and made his big league debut that day.


 

Cabrera scratched with left quad pull

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera was scratched from Thursday's lineup with a pulled left quadriceps muscle.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that Cabrera could be available as a pinch-hitter, but wasn't sure when he would be able to play the field again.

"He could hit, but he can't run, so I don't want to use him," Leyland said before the game with Kansas City.
