The Boston Red Sox have cut struggling pitcher John Smoltz. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein delivered the news to Smoltz on Friday.

The 42-year-old righty was designated for assignment, meaning Boston has 10 days to trade or release him.

Smoltz was roughed up by the New York Yankees in a 13-6 loss Thursday night.
